Wellington got its railway in April 1874, when the line to Lower Hutt opened. In 1902 the Kelburn cable car began climbing from downtown up the hill toward the Botanic Garden, and it still runs today. The suburban network was then electrified step by step. In July 1938 the Johnsonville Line became New Zealand's first electrified suburban railway, and in February 2011 electric service on the Kāpiti Line was extended to Waikanae, with the new Matangi trains entering regular service that March.
