Melbourne opened Australia's first steam railway in September 1854, running from Flinders Street to Sandridge. Today the city has 16 suburban rail lines and about 155 miles of tram routes, billed as the largest tram network in the world. Starting in 1981 the City Loop opened in stages under the central city and was finished in 1985, and in November 2025 the Metro Tunnel opened, a 5.6 mile tunnel with 5 new stations under the city center. Since February 2026, three suburban lines have run through it full time.
