Perth got its railway in 1881, when the line from Fremantle through Perth to Guildford opened. More than a century later, the suburban network was electrified in the early 1990s and pushed north and south down the middle of the freeways, with the Joondalup Line opening in 1992 and the Mandurah Line in December 2007. Under the Metronet program the network has grown even faster. The Airport Line opened in October 2022, and in 2024 and 2025 the Yanchep extension, the Ellenbrook Line, the Thornlie-Cockburn Line, and the Byford extension all opened.
