Canberra's railway arrived from Queanbeyan in 1914, carrying only freight at first, and passenger trains began in 1923. Today three trains a day run to Sydney. City rail took almost another century. In April 2019 the first stage of Canberra's light rail opened, running about 7.5 miles from Gungahlin in the north to Civic in the city center, and in September 2021 a new stop at Sandford Street brought the line to 14 stops. Stage 2A, which extends south to Commonwealth Park, is under construction and expected to open in early 2028.
