Adelaide got its railway in 1856, when the line to Port Adelaide opened. By 1958 every city tram route had closed except one, the line to the seaside at Glenelg that had opened in 1929, and it later became the starting point for a new network. From 2007 the trams were extended into the city center, and in 2018 a branch opened toward the Botanic Garden. On the rail side, the Seaford extension opened in February 2014 with Adelaide's first electric trains, and electric service began on the Gawler Line to the north in 2022.
