Brisbane was connected to the railway in July 1875, when the new Albert Bridge linked the city to Queensland's first line, which had opened from Ipswich ten years earlier. Suburban rail then spread across South East Queensland. The first electric line opened in November 1979, and in May 2001 Airtrain began running trains from the city center straight to Brisbane Airport. Cross River Rail, now under construction, is expected to open in 2029 with 4 new underground stations in and around the city center.
