Sendai got its first subway line in 1987, when the Namboku Line opened between Yaotome and Tomizawa. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake damaged the subway and halted service, but the full line was running again by April 29, little more than a month later. In the decades since, the network has grown step by step. The JR Sendai Airport Line, opened in 2007, gave Sendai Airport its first rail link, and in December 2015 the Tozai Line opened, crossing the Namboku Line at Sendai Station and giving the subway its cross shape.
