Hiroshima got its first urban rail line in 1912, when its streetcars began running. In the century since, the Hiroden network has grown to about 35 km, including the Miyajima Line out to the Miyajima ferry, making it the longest tram system in Japan. Just three days after the 1945 atomic bombing, city trams were partly back in service, and in August 2025 the tram platforms moved into the second floor of the new Hiroshima Station building, a few steps from the JR gates, cutting about four minutes off the ride downtown.
