Fukuoka joined the rail network in December 1889, when Hakata Station opened. The city's rail system grew out of JR Kyushu, Nishitetsu, and the city subway. In 1924 today's Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line opened from Fukuoka (Tenjin) to Kurume, and in 1981 the subway Kuko Line opened, began through service with the JR Chikuhi Line in 1983, and reached Fukuoka Airport in 1993, just two stops from Hakata. In March 2023 the Nanakuma Line was extended to Hakata, so riders from southwestern Fukuoka can now reach Hakata Station without changing trains.
