Naha got its first postwar railway in 2003, when the Okinawa Urban Monorail, known as Yui Rail, opened. Okinawa had passenger trains as early as 1914, but they were destroyed in air raids during World War II, and the remaining track was pulled up after the war because steel was scarce, leaving the island dependent on cars for more than half a century. In October 2019 the line was extended to Tedako-Uranishi in Urasoe, bringing it to about 17 km and 19 stations, and since 2020 riders can pay with Suica and other nationwide IC cards as well as the local OKICA.
