Nagoya joined the rail network in May 1886, when Nagoya Station opened on a line that later became part of the Tokaido Main Line. Today the city's rail system is made up of JR Central, Meitetsu, Kintetsu, and the city subway, with Meitetsu and Kintetsu running from Nagoya Station toward Gifu, Toyohashi, Chubu Centrair Airport, Mie, and Osaka. The city's first subway line, today's Higashiyama Line, opened in 1957. In October 2004 the Meijo Line was completed as a loop and the Aonami Line began carrying passengers the same day, and in 2005 Linimo opened for the Aichi Expo as Japan's first commercial HSST maglev line.
