Nagano got its own local railway in 1926, when the first section of the Nagano Electric Railway opened, reaching Nagano Station two years later. Its limited expresses today run on retired Narita Express and Odakyu Romancecar trains. In the decades since, the city's rail has changed a great deal. In 1981 the line from Nagano Station to Zenkojishita was moved underground, and in 1997 the Nagano Shinkansen opened ahead of the next year's Winter Olympics, cutting travel time to Tokyo sharply, while Shinano Railway took over local service on the old Shin'etsu Main Line the same day.
