Macau got its first railway of any kind in 2019, when the Light Rapid Transit's Taipa Line opened. Its trains run without drivers, and at first they served only Taipa and Cotai. Since then the network has gradually reached further. In December 2023 the line crossed the water on the lower deck of the Sai Van Bridge to Barra station on the Macau Peninsula, near A-Ma Temple, and the Hengqin Line, opened in 2024, reaches the Hengqin border crossing about two minutes from Lotus station, giving travelers another way into Hengqin.
