Beijing finished its first subway line, Line 1, in 1969, though the public could not ride it until 1981. In the decades since, the network has grown from a single east-west line into more than 900 km of track by the end of 2025. The Capital Airport Express, opened just before the 2008 Olympics, let travelers ride the train from Beijing Capital Airport into the city, and the Daxing Airport Express, opened in 2019, runs fully automated at up to 160 km/h, connecting the new Daxing International Airport south of the city to the network.
