Chongqing got its first urban rail line in 2005, when Line 2, a straddle-type monorail, opened as the first line of its kind in western China. In the twenty years since, the network has grown from a monorail that runs through an apartment building (Liziba station sits on the sixth to eighth floors) into a system spanning both banks of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Line 3, about 55 km long, holds the Guinness record as the longest monorail line in the world, and Hongyancun station, opened in 2022, lies 116 meters underground, and the escalator ride down from one of its entrances takes almost eight minutes.
