Guangzhou got its first metro line in 1997, when the opening section of Line 1 began running between Xilang and Huangsha. In the nearly thirty years since, the network has grown from that short stretch into one of the longest metro systems in the world. The Guangfo Line, opened in 2010, was the first metro in China to cross between two cities, letting riders travel directly between Guangzhou and Foshan, and Line 18, opened in 2021, runs at up to 160 km/h, bringing Panyu and Nansha in the south much closer to the city center.
