Toronto got its first subway line in March 1954, when the Yonge subway opened from Union to Eglinton, the first subway in Canada. In the seventy-plus years since, the network has grown with the city. The UP Express, opened in 2015, gave travelers a direct train from Union Station to Pearson Airport, and Line 6 Finch West opened in December 2025, followed in February 2026 by the long-awaited Line 5 Eglinton, which crosses midtown Toronto from Mount Dennis to Kennedy.
