Edmonton got its first urban rail line in April 1978, when its LRT began service in time for the Commonwealth Games. It was the first North American city with a metro population under one million to build a modern light rail line. Its downtown stations are underground and connect to the Pedway. In the forty-plus years since, the network has kept growing. The Metro Line began service to NAIT in the north in 2015, and in November 2023 the low-floor Valley Line Southeast opened, running at street level between Mill Woods and downtown.
