Daejeon got its first subway line in 2006, when Line 1 opened between Panam and the Government Complex. Construction had started in 1996 but was held up for years by the Asian financial crisis the following year, and the full line to Banseok finally opened in 2007, about 23 km long with 22 stations. The network is still growing. An extension toward the Sejong Government Complex is being planned, and Line 2, a hydrogen fuel-cell tram line, is now under construction and will meet Line 1 at five stations.
