Busan got its first subway line in 1985, when Line 1 opened, making it the second city in Korea after Seoul to have a metro. In the forty years since, the network has grown to four subway lines plus light rail and commuter trains. Line 4, opened in 2011, runs on rubber tires without drivers and was the first driverless metro line in Korea, and the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail opened the same year, linking Gimhae Airport and the neighboring city of Gimhae to the network. At the end of 2016 the Donghae Line began frequent commuter service, making trips toward Haeundae and Gijang much easier.
