Tucson got its modern rail system in July 2014, when the Sun Link streetcar opened. The line starts at the University of Arizona's health sciences campus and runs through the main campus, the Fourth Avenue shopping district, and downtown, then west across I-10 to the Mercado District, about 3.9 miles with 21 stops. The streetcar stopped charging fares in March 2020, and in August 2025 the city council voted not to bring fares back, keeping it free. It carried about 1.5 million riders that year.
