Seattle's monorail opened in 1962 for the World's Fair, and it still runs between Seattle Center and downtown. Modern light rail arrived in July 2009 and reached Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that same year, while Sounder commuter trains have run since 2000 and now link Tacoma, Seattle, and Everett. The light rail network has grown quickly in recent years. In August 2024 the 1 Line was extended north to Lynnwood, and in March 2026 the 2 Line crossed Lake Washington on the I-90 floating bridge, linking Seattle with Bellevue and Redmond.
