Los Angeles got its modern rail system in July 1990, when the Blue Line (now the A Line) opened from downtown to Long Beach. Metrolink commuter rail began service in 1992, and the Red Line subway opened in 1993. In the thirty years since, Metro Rail has grown to 6 lines and more than 100 stations. In June 2023 the Regional Connector opened downtown, joining separate routes into the A and E lines that run straight through the city center, and in May 2026 the D Line was extended 3 stations west under Wilshire Boulevard to La Cienega.
