El Paso's streetcars stopped running in the 1970s, including the international line across the border to Ciudad Juárez. More than forty years later, in November 2018, streetcars returned. Six restored PCC cars run between downtown and the University of Texas at El Paso on two loops that form a figure eight, about 4.8 miles round trip with 27 stops. In July 2021 the streetcar came back from a pandemic shutdown of more than a year and became fare free, and in 2024 it carried about 240,000 riders, nearly three times the year before.
