Charlotte got its first modern rail line in November 2007, when the LYNX Blue Line light rail opened. In the years since, the network has slowly taken shape. In March 2018 the Blue Line was extended north to UNC Charlotte, letting students and commuters ride straight into downtown, and the CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar opened in 2015 and was extended in 2021 to about 4 miles. Rides on the Gold Line are currently free.
