Boston
Boston got the first subway in the United States in September 1897, when the Tremont Street Subway opened, and that tunnel is still the heart of the Green Line. In the century since, the MBTA, known as the T, has grown into a network of subway, light rail, and commuter rail. The Green Line Extension opened in two stages in 2022, bringing rail into Somerville and Medford for the first time, and in March 2025 South Coast Rail began service, giving Fall River and New Bedford trains to Boston again after more than sixty years without them.
