Paris got its first metro line in July 1900, when Line 1 opened quietly during the Exposition Universelle. In the century since, the RER regional express, inaugurated in 1977, has joined the Métro, linking the suburbs to the city center. Line 14, opened in 1998, was the first driverless line in Paris, and Line 1 was converted to driverless operation by 2011. In June 2024, just before the Olympics opened, Line 14 was extended south to Orly Airport and north to Saint-Denis-Pleyel, becoming the longest line on the Métro.
