Lille got its first metro line in 1983, when the opening section of Line 1 began running, with the full line finished a year later. It was the first VAL system in the world, fully automated and driverless, and one of the earliest driverless metros anywhere. In the forty years since, the network has grown to two lines. Line 2 opened in 1989 and was extended in stages, reaching Tourcoing near the Belgian border in 2000, and in February 2026 work to run longer trains on Line 1 was completed, doubling its capacity.
