Ho Chi Minh City got its first metro line on December 22, 2024, when Line 1 opened between Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien. Construction began in 2012 with a target of 2018, and the line opened years late. It is about 20 km long with 14 stations. The three downtown stations, Ben Thanh, Opera House, and Ba Son, are underground, while the other 11 are elevated. About 80 percent of the funding came from Japanese development loans, and the trains were built by Hitachi. Rides were free for the first month, and fares began on January 21, 2025.
