Hanoi got its first metro line in November 2021, when Line 2A opened between Cat Linh and Ha Dong. It was also the first urban rail line to operate in Vietnam, about 13 km long with 12 stations, all elevated. Since then the network has started to grow. In August 2024 the elevated section of Line 3 opened between Nhon and Cau Giay, adding about 8.5 km in the west of the city. Its underground section toward Hanoi Station is still under construction, and once it opens Hanoi will have its first stretch of underground metro.
