London got its first underground line in January 1863, when the Metropolitan Railway opened between Paddington and Farringdon. It was the first underground railway in the world, with steam locomotives pulling gas-lit wooden carriages. In the more than 160 years since, the network has grown into a vast system. The City and South London Railway, opened in 1890, was the first deep-level tube run by electric trains and is now part of the Northern line, and the Elizabeth line, opened in 2022, runs through new tunnels under the center, linking suburbs on both sides of London with Heathrow Airport.
