Kuala Lumpur got its first light rail line in 1996, when the STAR LRT, today's Ampang Line, opened. KTM Komuter commuter trains had started running the year before. In the thirty years since, the network has grown into a mix of light rail, monorail, MRT, and airport express lines. The PUTRA LRT, now the Kelana Jaya Line, opened in 1998 as the first fully automated, driverless rail line in the Klang Valley, and KL Sentral opened in 2001, followed a year later by the KLIA Ekspres, where travelers on some flights can even check in at KL Sentral before riding to the airport.
