Port Louis

Mauritius got its first railway in May 1864, but passenger trains stopped in 1956 and freight ended in 1964, leaving the island without rail for more than half a century. In October 2019 the first section of the Metro Express light rail opened, with regular fare service starting in January 2020, running from Port Louis to Rose Hill. The line then climbed toward the towns of the central plateau. It reached Curepipe in October 2022, and in January 2023 a branch opened to Réduit while the Port Louis end was extended to Place d'Armes downtown, bringing the system to about 19 miles and 22 stations.
